Posted in Football with tags , on January 31, 2009 by beaverfootball

According to The Seattle Times Condoleezza Rice has thrown her hat into the ring to be the next comissioner of the Pac-10.  She fell in love with football while going to school in Denver while her dream job is to be the NFL’s commissioner.

Her dad also coached football while she was growing up as the biography from Answers.com says,  ”John Rice coached football and taught his daughter everything he could about tactics and strategy. Rice grew to love the game and would follow football wherever she went.”

The Columbian published a good article on Evergreen’s Kyrell Hudson.

As you probably already know Hudson will go pro in baseball if the money is right.  But if he does end up at Oregon State he is going to try and play both baseball and football.

“If I get paid high enough, I’m going to go pro,” Hudson told The Columbian. “If the money’s not right, I’m going to get my education and play (two) sports.”

He also named Defensive Player of the Year.

Here’s what Baldwin head coach A.J. Roos told the Maui News. (click on the link to read the whole article)

”He is going to help them out a lot,” Roloos said of Rosa. ”I watched him play in that Mainland (All-Star) game and he looked pretty good against other future college guys. He will get much bigger, he will get stronger, especially if they leave him at defensive end. They don’t want big guys, they want mean guys who can get off the ball and that is Mana. He will do well at OSU and I am excited for him.”

Two ex-Beavers on Weber State coaching staff

Inoke Breckterfield was officially introduced as Weber State’s defensive line coach Wednesday.

He  joins former Beaver safety Jake Cookus who was recently promoted to Weber State’s co-defensive coordinator after spending four years as the Wildcats cornerbacks coach.

Breckterfield spent two years as OSU’s graudate assistant on defense.  He played in Corvallis from 1995-98 earning first team All-Pac-10 and third team All-American honors as a senior.  He was named the Morris Trophy winner given to the conference’s top defensive lineman.

Breckterfield finished his OSU career as the leader for tackles-for-loss (55.5) and sacks (19.5) – he now ranks second in both.

Cookus walked onto the Oregon State program in 1998 as a freshman and quickly earned a scholarship as a sophomore.

He played in all 12 games in 2000 and started the last three.  His greatest game came in the 2000 Civil War when he picked off Joey Harrington three times as the Beavers knocked off the #10 Ducks 23-13 and received a birth into the Fiesta Bowl.

A bit more on Obum Gwacham

Posted in Recruiting with tags on January 29, 2009 by beaverfootball

After visiting the school over the weekend, Ayala High School wide receiver Obum Gwacham was offered a scholarship to Oregon State on Tuesday and immediately committed to the Beavers.

Gwacham had just 13 receptions for 262 yards and two touchdowns this season, but Oregon State was undoubtedly attracted to the freakish athletic ability of the 6-foot-6, 205-pound senior. Gwacham, the son of Nigerian parents who moved to the states when he was 7, was the state’s fifth-best high jumper last year, topping out at 6-foot-10.

Oregon State assistant coach Joe Seumalo, who told Gwacham the Beavers had an offer for him while he was in Corvallis, made the offer official on Tuesday. It was a relief for the soft-spoken Gwacham, who thought his pedestrian statistics scared off recruiters.

“I’m sure they did,” he said. “But Oregon State stuck by me. They knew about my athletic ability. They knew I could make the big play. Coach Seumalo saw something special in me.”  … from the Inland Daily Bulletin.
